Hexane extract (oil) of Dillenia indica seed powder was evaluated for antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. It exhibited broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity. The MIC values for different bacterial and fungal strains varied from 1.0 to 2.0 mg/ml concentration and DIZ from 12 to 28 mm of the extract. Screening for secondary metabolites of the extract revealed the presence of phenols, triterpenoids, carbohydrates and fatty acids. To evaluate antioxidant activity, TLC-DPPH, DPPH, H2O2, ABTS radical, SOD and reducing power activities method were carried out. The distinct antimicrobial activity was observed against prominent pathogens indicates that this oil may be useful in treatment of microbial infections. The hexane extract of D. indica shows moderate antioxidant activity when compared with controls.
